Power Supply Problem

So there i am today playing a game and the power supply goes up in smoke. It was a 350w power supply for a P4 system. I went to the store and got a 400w power supply because that is all they had. The system will start to boot and then just power off. sometimes it boots for almost 15 seconds and other times only 5. What is the problem here?
Thanks in advance!!!

Are you sure it came from the power supply? Also, if your power supply went it might have fried something on your motherboard, something that doesn't recieve power until 5-15 seconds into the boot, which would explain your situation. Can you get in to BIOS without the computer shutting off/restarting?

that is what i was thinking

probably the mobo.... friend had similar problem but he replaced both the PSU and the MOBO and now it works great... hope you didnt fry it when your PSU went up in smoke

i would see if your new power supply is a true 400w, most likely running at 230watt or borrow a mates power supply to test if still freezing up i dare say it's your motherboard
