currently my system consists of a:
1. AMD athlon 64 x2 windsor 4200+
2. (3) western digital hard drive; 1 80 GB IDE, 2 250 GB SATA, all drives are 7200 RPM
3. ANTEC 430 W true-power supply
4. ANTEC lanboy case
5. (2) 1 GB sticks of DDR2
6. (1) DVD-RW drive
7. NVIDIA 7900 GS 256 MB version
8. Mainboard :Gigabyte GA-M55PLUS-S3G
i am currently considering upgrading to a 8800 GTS video card. they have come down in price recently and i was thinking about directx 10 gaming. is it worth it? and would my currently supply be able to take the "heat". i like my 7900, but would like to get into the direct 10 card. i currently play fsx, company of hereos, and world in conflict. all of which support directX 10

Extreme OuterVision has a really good PSU calculator. Plug in your components, and the calculator will tell you how many watts are required from your PSU.

I can tell you that your current PSU is probably insufficient for the 8800. Those cards require at least 450W.

Whats your budget? are you on windows XP? if you are you would need to have Vista for DX10, also at them moment the $280 8800GT 512mb card whoops the GTS's and are right with the GTX

well to be honest, i'm currently running xp however i have a windows vista basic license. i dont currently run vista, but i have it. i think its a resource hog so i ran vista for a while but went back to xp, is direct x 10 worth having to run vista? does vista basic support direct x 10? i think it does but im not sure. also is a 7900 GS going to run out of steam soon? i think its a good card but i'm thinking direct x 10. i also used the extreme outvision powersupply calcuator and it came up with less than 400 W draw with a 8800 series card and the rest of my setup. i think its not accurate but im not sure. number seems a little low.

Hmm... maybe cause you didn't tell which type of 8800? An 8800GT has the power suction of an 8600GT (which is low), while the Ultra...

Idle - Low power compumption... Common sense right?

Loaded - Got's things to process = more power needed...

And don't trust those calculators too much, for an rought estimate, sure. But for 100% accuracy, nope.
