Praetor, I need your help

My friend never wanted to listen to me before when I told him we both should've got gaming computers, instead of Xbox 360's. Now he only has like $300, and will be getting more for X-mas. He will have a budget of around $800, nothing more than $1,000. I know it sounds like an easy task to put together a setup liek this, as he came to me since I built my computer. However, everytime I try and pick out a part, I don't settle for the price range he's in, and always pick out like a newer product for only a few bucks more. After I do that, it starts to get out of hand.

What I need you to do, is reccomend some equally performing parts, that would lower the price. For instance, I was thinking a similar hard-drive which was 200GB, but its only a few dollars less, which seems pointless. Anyway, Please just help me!!! Thanks!

Edit: He does not need a Monitor, Keyboard, or Mouse.
However, he Thinks he doesnt need a new optical drive. But the two ones he has are some crappy stock HP drives which would load **** in forever.
