presario r3000 cutting out

Apologies if I'm in the wrong forum but it's not too clear to me where to post technical probs!

I've heard all about the power socket problems on these machines and in fact that seemed to be the cause for my daughter's machine to keep cutting out so I've put a new socket on for her and thought all was OK. Worked fine for the first half hour, then for 25 mins and so on so that now it only comes on for a few seconds. When it turns itself off there's a click from the far left hand corner but that's maybe just the hard disc shutting off?

Anyone got any ideas what the problem is? Many thanks for anticipated solutions!!!!:o

So you hit the power button, it turns on for a few seconds, and turns right off?

If so, it's most likely a bad motherboard.

Yes, that's right. To start with it stayed on for about half an hour having gone thro' POST and loaded Windows. So, it was usable. Every subsequent boot-up seems to last less time so at the moment I'm giving it a good rest before trying again. Did wonder whether it was overheating but can't find any reason. Would any logs give any idea of why it shut off? If so where would I find the logs?

You may want to just see if the PC is getting dusty, if so, take it outside and spray out the dust with compressed air. That should get rid of any overheating problems. Otherwise, I'm going to assume it's a bad motherboard or possibly power supply. When you say "a new socket" do you mean a new power supply?

Azeem - OK Thanks. I'm looking at Event Viewer now and, funnily enough there were no events logged between 01012003 and 220512. Most of those logs over the last couple of days are just Information Logs but there a few Error Logs so I'll have a look at those. Thanks for the pointer

Vistakid - yes the centre pin on the power socket (at the back of the laptop) was broken and not making contact with the plug (from the mains cable adaptor), and as I'd heard these give problems I decided to replace it cos with out that centre pin the computer was useless and wouldn't charge the battery and wouldn't run off the mains!! I think it's b*****ed up the battery so will only run off the mains adaptor now!! Hope it's not the Mobo gone.

Any other ideas?

Can you send the laptop into somewhere to get it professionally repaired? Just get them to repair the power connector where the A/C adapter plugs into the laptop, because that's broken right?

No it's not broken now. I fixed that bit with a new part which I soldered into place but the machine still cuts out with a little 'crack' sound coming from the same corner. i.e. around the processor area

Just noticed that altho both cooling fans come on to start with one turns of within a few seconds and then seems pretty erratic so maybe this is causing overheating. I'm just running the machine now with fan cover removed and altho one fan not going the machine is not cutting out - not yet anyway!

Anyone know if both fans should run constantly?

OK if the fans are spinning pretty quick it probably means there is quite a bit of dust in them. Spray compressed air into them and see if any dust comes out. It may not solve your problem now, but it may solve a problem 'waiting to happen' down the line. :D

Fans and fins all look pretty clean but don't understand why one fan is on constantly and the other hardly at all - faulty sensor or connection perhaps?

Thought I might have a look and see if I can wire both fans together so they both run constantly - if this stops the laptop from shutting down then I guess it's a cooling prob perhaps caused by faulty sensor on mobo. I've looked at BIOS and there's no way to adjust fan speed or voltage there so I'm not left with much choice unless anyone has any brilliant ideas!!
