Price guide on used desktops

Hey guys,

I'm after a used computer (because I'm a peasant) and am wondering what a fair price would be and not to get ripped off or overbid on eBay for example.

I'm after a quad core or dual core with around 4GB RAM (upgradable) with a half decent NVIDIA graphics card - I'm not a gamer so it doesn't have to be top draw!

I'm based in the UK/England if that matters at all.

Thanks in advance for any tips or input.

Well put it this way, i just priced up a brand new ivybridge i am building with everything except a graphics card.

Intel g2030 dual core, 4gb ram, 120gb ssd, 500w ocz psu and my whole build comes to only £290

So if you are buying a used machine, i would say start about £200 for a decent base unit but then price would rise depending on the spec of the system

shame you stay in england mate, i have got a nice g840 sandybridge unit up for sale just now for £200

You're asking about a complete system (CPU, monitor, keyboard, etc) or just a box?

Do you have Craigslist in your area?

Hi gentlemen,

daisymtc, will pop the details on here when I spot one that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. ;)

jamesd1981, indeed, that's the type if thing I'm after.

Twiki, yep, just the box. Never tried craigslist...

Craigslist is full of home builders. They salvage parts and put together systems. Also there'll be some who upgraded and just want to get rid of their old boxes.

What exactly do you intend to do with the machine?..you say you don't game but need a half decent NVIDIA graphics card?

I agree with building your own if you are up to it,Works out cheaper and you have the fun of building it yourself. :)

Hey guys,

My budget is around £150 to £200.

I haven't built a PC for years and fear I may have lost my touch and how things work these days.

I need a half decent NVIDIA card as I do a bit of 3D and Adobe After Effects work. I also work a bit with Adobe Photoshop which seems more demanding on the ol' graphics cards these days.

This was the type of thing I am after though I'm not sure if the buyer paid/bid too much for it:

Looks like a decent pc for that price, just bare in mind that you will have to download windows vista home basic and then install it on the pc instead of windows 7. If you don't mind doing that I would go for it.

Neither have I but for 139 pounds it ain't bad at all. Quite decent CPU and 4 gigs memory with a DVD writer. Since it's got Vista OS key you can download Vista and put it on DVD.

I used to have Vista Home Basic and I did good with it. Win 7 is better no doubt but then you'll have to buy it. Or go for Win 8.1.

Tried looking at that but had the following issues:

1) Not sure of the date of manufacture.
2) Processor list seems limited.
3) Estimate is dollars (US I presume).

Also seemed to scout online ads to formulate an estimate and got it badly wrong in one case...

I would still look at a PC like the first link. Much better then the "Stone". The Stone has a Quadro, so good luck playing games. PSU? Almost definitely utter crap, worse than the Dell and HP stuff most likely.
