Printer shutdown

I recently purchased a new laptop. When I am at home, I hook up my HP printer via a USB port. However, when I leave the computer on and it goes into sleep mode, the printer connection is lost and I have to disconnect the power to the printer and restart it in order for the connection to be restored. I'm not sure if this is a hardware setup or system setup issue. Any suggestions that would allow for the printer to remain "connected"? I have printers hooked up to laptops at work and never have this problem

Thanks for any help you can give.

maybe when the laptop powers down to hibernate it cuts power to any external devices (usb to the printer), should be able to adjust that in power profiles if that is in fact the problem, but I just kinda thought that might be a possibility

use the HP cd that came with the printer, uninstall the printer, then reboot, before the notebook comes back up unplug the usb cable ( also make sure the usb cable is a ver 2 cable , the cable should have a v2 , or a roman numeral 1 and a slash the roman numeral 2 ) reinstall the printer , DO NOT PLUG THE USB CABLE IN TILL THE PROGRAM TELLS YOU, when you do plug the usb cable in , make sure the printer is on.
