I have never purchased a printer before, i have an epson r280 but drives me crazy that I cant print in black if the yellow is out?

I am looking for a printer that will work with black ink only, it is mainly for printing out stuff for school.

thanks

If color is out, then go into the print properties and have it print in grayscale. Not sure if all printers can do this though.

Laser or inkjet

I prefer lasers. Lasers are faster and bigger ink carts, which is actually called toner in laser printer world.

I have a laser printer that is by Brother. It is only $100 at office depot for the wifi version (not sure how much non-wifi is). Here is the link:http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/386637/Brother-HL-2270DW-Wireless-Monochrome-Laser/?Channel=Google&mr:trackingCode=2D8F4961-B5C1-DF11-98FF-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA&cm_mmc=Mercent-_-Googlepla-_-Technology+Printers_Scanners_Copiers_Faxes-_-386637&mr:adType=pla

Go to devices and printers, right click your printer and select printing preferences, then in the print options, there should be an option that says either, greyscale or black ink only, tick that box and it will only print black, no colour.

Ya, I know what you mean. My wife has a Brother. If one color goes out, it will refuse to print at all - grayscale or otherwise. I have an HP Officejet 6500. All of the colors can run dry and it will still print B&W (using grayscale, which is my default, of course). So a Hewlett Packard is one of your options.
