Printer to Laptop Direct

I keep seeing threads with people with printer network problems, including myself, and the question has arisen, Can the printer connect directly to the laptop wireless without going through a wireless router? This would seem a much simpler method. If so what is the different in the set-up?
 
The answer is no because the printer needs to be assigned an IP address and that can't happen without it being set up through the router.
 
Or unless you can setup an Adhoc network between the printer and laptop... never tried though. It is a thought.
