printer won't print

It's a Brother MFC-J470DW Printer and it shows to be completely full on black ink and nearly full on red and blue ink, the only ink that is empty is the yellow ink, yet it won't let me print a black and white document, even though the black ink is full.

Yep that is par for the course. If any cartridge is empty then the printer will not print. Same with most, if not all, models. That is certainly the case with my Epson printers.

Yeah, if 1 color is out then it won't print no matter what. I have the mfc-j475dw and the magenta is out and won't let me print. I only use it to scan things with and to print my color business cards when I need them, use a mono color laser printer for the regular things I need to print.

Either print quality is set too low or your print nozzles are plugged up and won't allow the ink to flow properly. Might have to clean your print nozzles using the cleaning utility.
