Private server?

Hiya! I'm looking to host an MMO private server for the use of a few friends. I've heard about external hardware that is specifically used for running a server, but I'm not sure what to look for. Any help?

Also, what would I have to do to get the game to function with this server? I'm not looking to boost experience gain or make any other sort of modification. I simply want the same game to run without having to be bothered by the rest of the player-base. Would I simply have to change the port somewhere in the settings, or is there I file I actually have to edit?

Thanks for any info!

I don't know anything about private servers or anything like that but for hosting game servers of any type you want lots of RAM, a decent CPU, and a fabulous internet speed. Also not sure but if you're private server violates the Terms and Conditions of the game you're doing then you might not be allowed to talk about that here.

Run www.speedtest.net and post back with the results as that's the single most important thing as far as hosting is concerned.

The results I got were:

Ping - 9 ms
Download - 23.83 Mbps
Upload - 3.52 Mbps

I'm looking to get an entirely external server, though--I'll be using it for other things as well. This will be the computer that I play on, and I don't exactly want to buy another full-on computer to use as the server.

Also, the game is completely free-to-play and I haven't found anything saying that I can't run my own server.

So you're going to be paying a service to somebody else to host this server for you? From a company I'm guessing?

Ragnarok Online. I've read a few statements saying that it's no longer illegal to host a private server for the game.

But regardless of whether or not I can legally host a server for this game, I still want the server hardware for other uses. I'll be creating my own MMO with these friends, and we'd like to have a nice little server set up for us to use.

I think you'd need to buy a full machine. Heck you could probably get a cheap prebuilt then up the RAM and just have a wired connection straight to your router/modem.

Well a few years back I hosted a Private Server for a crap game called Conquer Online. Didn't need alot of ram or cpu power to run it. 512mb and a single core 1.2ghz lol.
So from what I've seen of Ragnarok Online you wouldn't need a whole lot of RAM/CPU but might want a reasonable HardDrive for diskspace, updates/patches etc. But I still agree with Denther about buying a prebuilt and up the ram. Or find a second hand computer and see if it needs upgrading etc.

My friend has an extra computer, a mac mini. Is there a way to toss a server on there that would be compatible with our Windows computers? Or does the server need to be hosted on a Windows?

If I'm right you can just install wndows on the mac mini, don't quote me on this as I'm not 100% sure on this. Then from there on you can use windows programs on this.

1. You can run it from any system with any OS, however obviously some will be better suited than others

2. If you want it hosted elsewhere, you will need to rent a dedicated server, which is not cheap

3. Read the EULA for the game regarding hosting/changing their files. Im at work now else ibwould check, but unless it has discontinued and the devs are no longer hosting the game, i cant see it being legal
