I have a problem child computer. My brother built this computer just over a year ago and it has been sitting on a shelf in his closet ever since. He had so many problems getting going he shelved the project. I got it going but this thing is slower than dog sh*^&. Here are the specs that I know and I have a cpuz file I cannot upload due to file size.
mobo ASrock p4vm8
processor celeron 2.93 ghz type 340
ram 768 mb 2sticks 1 512mb 1 256 mb
ddr333 pc2700 wintec is one kingston is the other
harddrive is western digital 60 gig
2 dvd rw burner/ roms
one case fan
one intel processer fan
case is genric I dont know of the brand
I am running a cable modem hard wired through a wireless belkin 802.11 router

How can I speed this thing up? I have a 500 mhz box running windows me that is faster than this POS WTF is up with that?

Are you sure it's the "internet" going slow and not just the computer lagging.

Go to safe mode and run adaware, spybot, a virus scan(AVG works well if you don't have one) Then run Hijackthis and post the log here.

Everything runs slow! Not just the "internet" Boot up takes 1min 3 sec just to get to the first windows xp load screen total of 2 min 5secs till windows is loaded. when the computer goes to boot up I get a boot error please load boot material into drive and reboot. I ctrl alt delete and it reboots just fine. I have gone into bios and changed boot prioitys hd to cd. Then cd to hd and it makes no diff. here is the hijack this file.

another thing I have noticed is the mobo will not reconize my dvd roms/ rws everytime just sometimes. they are both on the secondary ide cable one set as master the other as slave. I belive that is why I get the boot error. Also the hard drive shows a fat32. It is a 60 gig according to the label on the drive itself. however when you get into windows explorer it shows the total hd capacity at 31.4 gig. ?!?!?

31.4 free? or 31.4 total? im guessing you have a boot virus, or similar. other than that your MOBO is malfunctioning. is your compy overheating? is the DVD drives's cables tight? try another HDD and see what happend, your HDD could be failing.

HDD failing noises: continuous clicking, buzzing, running and dying, loud clicking or noises

I have an hdd that makes noises in a mobo but when I switch it to another system the hdd stops making noises...

31.4 total!!! I have a bad feeling that it is a bad partition. no abnormal noises. The computer works but is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww In fact I am typing this response on it right now. I am updating my virus info right now and will rescan.
All cables tight and in good working order. Is it over heating I don't think so. It usually runs right about 29 degress c. About 118-120 degress f that is at the processer mobo is about 10 degress cooler

if i was you i would try defragmenting the hard drive or wipe it and fresh install of xp - my old computer took more than 10 minutes to get onto a program after i turn the on swicth - i put in a different hard drive and it ran very fast (one 4 2.0, 256 ram) try another hard drive or format and re install
