Problem creating network

Hi, I have moved my desktop computer upstairs, before reformatting both the laptop and desktop computer, I had a working network, now I have a poor wireless network card (not for much longer, but I need a new desk first). They are both visible to each other, but when I try to access the desktop it says it can't find it, and when I try to access the laptop I fail the password, even though I have copied it to the letter. I have successfully created a network multiple times with windows 7 and xp, even if I have had a few problems with xp, I always had it working okay, I can access the files on the laptop from my bluray player which is connected to the network, but the bluray player doesn't even detect the desktop. Is this due to my network card? or am I doing something wrong? thanks.

I've seen Windows have a lot of name resolution issues lately. I suggest assigning your computers a static IP address and access it through Explorer using the IP address (example: \\192.168.1.199)

Thanks for the replies, I am currently trying the second solution purely because I am cooking my dinner, and the other computer is 2 flights of stairs up (I'm lazy). Failing that one I will try the first. I have never set a static ip address before, I have a Sky router, can this be done on my router? here is a screen shot of what I'm hoping is the right place (the kids games are not mine, really)

No. You set the IP address statically on each individual computer. Go into the network adapter properties and choose the properties of the TCP/IPv4 section.

You'll want to set them as 192.168.0.x (replace X with any number higher than 1 and between 254). The subnet will be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway will be 192.168.0.1

For DNS servers just use the Google DNS servers which are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Use this graphic for reference, but use the IP addresses I gave you. Also, don't assign the two computers the same IP address, they must both be individual and different (such as 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3)

I went on to try the solution above, and for some reason unknown to me it has actually partially resolved itself, the laptop has found the upstairs computer, but now can only see the default and public files, I can't access the user folder, not sure about the other way round as yet. Think I might have to look at the settings on the upstairs one and see if it's that. Thanks for taking the time to help, if it happens again I will refer to it

You need to share the user folder(s) you want to share. They're not visible for security reasons by default.
