problem installing new video card

i just received my new 8600gt 256mb ddr3 card made by xfx. i put it into the pci express slot, and booted up, but with the s-video and the vga plugged into it, it wouldn't display anything. so i switched back to on-board vga, went into the bios, switched primary display adapter to pci express, and rebooted, but still nothing. switched back to on-board vga again, and put in the support cd, but it says that it doesn't recognize the vga as an xfx product. went to the xfx site, registered the card and tried to download the support files, but it tells me there's nothing that better matches my setup.

i'm running a 500W psu, amd 5600+ 2.8mhz dual core, on an m2a-vm asus board, with 3.3 gb ram (cause i'm running xp pro 32-bit, it's really 4gb), and a 500gb hard drive from hitachi, an old vga ctr monitor, and my 32" tv.

anyone got any ideas on how to make my pc recognize the new video card?

unfortunately that didn't work. again it told me that it could not find drivers for my setup.

edit:
ok, i got pissed off that it wasn't working and pulled the card out. but then i decided to give it one more try, and now for some reason i didn't even need to do anything the card was automatically recognized and installation went smoothly. it's weird because the card was in properly last time as i could hear the fan spinning. anyway, thanks for the help guys.

Just because the fan was spinning doesn't mean that it's working properly. If there was some dust in the slot or not properly seated all the way in...
