Problem printing from Word and Web

This is a problem that about which a friend asked for advice. When you try to print a word document or something from a web page, the normal dialogue box appears. When you click OK the "save document" dialogue box comes up and clicking out of that takes you back to the document or web page.
The poblem does not exist working in Open Office but that does not solve the web side.
The problem has only recently appeared. The machine is a compaq laptop running Vista HP and Word is 2003.
I've tried it and can't get anywhere.

When the print dialogue appears make sure there is a printer selected.

The symptoms you describe would happen if you are printing to a file such as Document writer of document image writer.

Not going to be able to check what is in the printer box as the friend has gone abroad for a week. howver that does sound promising. Will post again after I've checked.

Actually I have just set my pc up with the document writer specified ans you're right. I think that's solved it. Thanks again.
