lately i have been having a problem resuming windows after stand-by. When I close my laptop while on and come back, the screen stays black and nothing will happen. I have to manually shut down and restart the computer. This does not happen every time, but it is very frusterating when it does happen. If anyone could help me, i would greatly appreciate it.

I have a toshiba satellite and am running Windows XP MCE with SP2.

Thanks

When Windows starts hanging up once in the standby mode you know you are then dealing with one or more damaged or missing system files. Do you have an installation disk or recovery disk with the I386 folder available? Run the "sfc /scannow" command at the Run prompt to start the system file checker with the disk in the cd rom drive. That will repair or replace any files found goofed up.

the I386 folder is on my recovery cd, but when i run the"sfc /scannow" command, it ask me to insert the windows xp disc 2, which i dont have. what do i need to do with the I386 folder

Ouch! alright! Generally that will require the installation disk due to the search for a disk in the cd drive unless you can borrow one to try it again just to try the sfc tool. I'm not sure if the recovery disk will allow a repair install either. But you may have a recovery option available to use the hidden recovery partition on the preinstallation seen there.

You may have to disable the standby mode altogether until this is corrected. That will require a trip into the Control Panel to the power options and you would simply set everything to "never" which basically "never go into standby mode", "never turn disks off after 20min.", and so forth. The I386 folder itself can be copied to the drive in case you need drivers from it.
