Problem ripping files with Media Player

I just installed a new radio/receiver in my car with USB input so I can use USB flash drives instead of CDs (much more convenient and saves the CDs). However, when I start to rip a CD using Media Player, it rips 4 - 6 songs then I get "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem a needs to shut down". Then if I open Media Player right away and try to rip another song, it shuts down again immediately. But if I wait about 15 minutes and select the tracks where it left off, it'll rip again with no problem. But then it'll shut down again after several songs. Why would it work again after giving it some time? What does a time factor have to do with it? Could it be a disk space issue...using disk space for a cache that needs to be dumped (and takes some time)? I have plenty of disk space available. Could it be in the Media Player settings/preferences? I don't even remember how to get to the preferences, so would appreciate knowing how to access it.

Any ideas what may be happening...any suggestions?

I'd try Real Player but the one time I tried it, the program completely took over my computer and was a big pain in the butt. It took an act of congress to finally get all the files out of my system.

Found Tools/Options but don't see anything that would cause the shut-downs. Actually, it's been doing much better. Guess it depends on what mood Media Player is in.

BTW, I'm not reproducing any CDs for distribution or resale, nor do I have any desire to do so. I'm only making it easier and more convenient to listen to music in my own vehicle via USB instead of messing with a ton of CDs, CD magazines, and a trunk-mounted CD changer I have to keep accessing to listen to different music. So I'm not too concerned about the copying aspect of what I'm doing.

FYI...With autorun, when you insert a CD, Media Player starts playing the first track and I was letting it play during the ripping process, and getting the errors/shutdowns. I discovered if I stop playback prior to ripping, I get no more shut-downs.
