Problem VPN a network hard disk

I have a Netgear WGU624 router and attached to that I have a hard disk. The disk is useable by all the computers on the LAN, so now I just need to make it accessible from work. I have setup the VPN in Windows and made a username and password for it.

When I type in my home IP address at work, I get a username and password dialog. I type in the username and password I made for VPN and it does something, but then says cannot connect.

I assume that my problem is either me not having told the router to allow traffic through (but there is no VPN menu on the router, so I don't know what to do) OR I am missing a step in the setup.

Do I need to tell the router to allow outside traffic in? If so how.
Am I right in typing my home's IP address? Do I need to try and connect directly to the disk drive? The drive on my network is 192.168.1.4

Your router is probably running NAT. A few things you can do is make the IP of your NAS a DMZ, or load third party firmware like DD-WRT on your router which will run the samba service and make your HD a SMB share to the interwebs. Your router must support the third party firmware though.
