problem with 8800GTS, fps drops

I am having a problem with my fps dropping while I am playing games. When I start playing FEAR, it will be around 200fps but after a minute or two, it will drop down to around 20. A couple of times I have received a message saying "display driver nvlddmkm has stopped responding and has recovered." I played Ghost Recon to see if it would do the same thing and the fps remained constant but it was only at 60 fps. Shouldn't it be higher than that playing Ghost Recon.

I have tried reinstalling the driver but no lock. At first I thought maybe it was a bad overclock but I went back to stock settings and it still happens.

If it was a bad o/c that caused it than you may have damaged your card, and dropping it back to stock settings isnt going to fix that, though it sounds like more of a software problem than a hardware problem

also, about ghost recon, some games have fps caps. 60 and 80 are both common fps caps. I dont know if ghost recon actually has an fps cap, but there certainly are games that do.

I googled the problem and it seems I am not the only one with this problem. Some say it is hardware related and other say it is software related. One person said removing a stick of ram solved the problem. I may give that a shot. Someone else said just plug the monitor in, nothing extra and that solved the problem.

If I can't get this figured out, I may contact Nvidia.

It's not just my card either. Several different ones are having the same problem.

I figured something out, maybe it will help. I just reinstalled Vista and before I installed the video drivers, I played FEAR. I was getting around 16 fps and stayed there so then I installed the latest video driver and played FEAR again. This time I was getting around 150 to 200 fps but it drops to around 16 fps, the same as it was before I installed the driver.

It seems to me that it is reverting back to the original driver for some reason. But now I am not getting that error, not yet anyways.

I am going to test it out on Crysis.
