Problem with 98

Having put together a new system(Intel mobo, Pentium D cpu, a combo DVD ROM and CD burner, and WD Raptor SATA drive), after installing a Win98 backup(which I will follow later by XP for a dual boot arrangement), I got a blue screen that basically mentioned the incompatibility of the Windows drivers with the mobo. There were yellow exclamation marks in the hard disk and floppy controllers in the Device Manager and the CD drive didn't appear in My Computer. Then following the instructions from a Microsoft Knowledge Base article, I went into the Registry to delete the "NO IDE" key but this had no effect at all.

So I'm curious to know it it's even *possible* to get the 98 to work out or if I'll just wind up having to wipe it out.

if you are going to do that.. since its "new" make sure those hardwares support 98 because if its new.. most of them dont have support for something like 98.. or if they do.. it'll be a different driver off their website or something similar..

You might have to reinstall the 98. However there might be some drivers for some of those parts but most manufactures don’t support 98 any more.

I know. Well, since the CD drive isn't recognized and the floppy disk controller has a yellow exclamation mark next to it in the
Device manager, I don't know how I'd be able to install the manufacturer's drivers to this(which I would have downloaded onto the CD or floppy on my other computer).

If you want to run Win 98 and Win XP in dual boot mode, why not install Win XP right away. This would give you the opportunity to look up the drivers of Win 98 through the Win XP operating system and download the needed Win 98 drivers on the HD.

The reason why there were exclamation marks on the hard disk and CD Rom is because you need updated drivers on Win 98 for the chipset. Most manufacturers still support Win 98, you can check the website of your MOBO.
