Problem with AVG free

I recently installed avg free and uninstalled my expired version of norton anti-virus. I did keep the internet security, since it hasn't expired yet. My problem is when checking email with outlook, it takes forever and ends up telling me it can't connect with my pop3 server. I'm not sure what's wrong. I've read lots of good things on this site about avg, but can't seem to get it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Todd

The leftovers from Norton are the problem there. AVG has it's own builtin email scanner. The problem there is a type of conflict between Norton and AVG unless something changed the email account information. The firs thing to do when deleting one antivirus program is to completely remove all parts of it when planning to run a new program.

I don't think installing another type/brand of anti-virus is the problem. Check your Program Files folder and make sure all the Norton anti-virus files are gone.

I have uninstalled the anti-virus, but it is norton internet security ( firewall, spyware blocker, etc,) that is still on my computer. Should I uninstall this software also?

As I mentioned earlier the leftovers from Norton are the first things to remove when switching to another antivirus program. AVG includes an email scanner as well as a boot sector scanner. Norton as well as others are intrusive into system resources. AVG on the other hand runs quietly until you start a manual scan. But you still haven't a firewall that came with Norton which one good reason why you probably having the problems with OE.

With AVG disabled in the startup group and services sections of the msconfig utility it still come up with a flashing recently when a trojan was copied to the hard drive upon reaching a new unknown site during a web search. Although none of the antivirus programs remove everything at least AVG lets you know where it is. I would dump Norton completely there and then add a few other programs like Spybot S&D, AdAware, to supplement it.

I guess i need to do a search and delete all leftovers. The internet security program is almost expired, I will probably delete all that too just to be sure. I guess I will just use windows firewall from now on. Thanks for your replies.

SyGate and Comodo are freeware firewalls you could try out in addition to the Windows firewall. That requires an active antivirus program to be installed and running in order to enable that. Once you get rid of the Norton leftovers run a free registry cleaner like RegClean or RegCleaner to remove any crap still lingering in the system registry itself. That can avoid problems with any new security programs like AVG, Avast, Antivir, and others.

For the free Microsoft cleaner, http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=pdp_prod
For RegCleaner, http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

While you are at majorgeeks you can browse through the freewares and sharewares they seem to have an abundance of. For antivirus you will note that some popular name will come up at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html
