problem with connecting iphone to laptop

hi all

i just downloaded itunes onto my laptop, then once that have installed i plugged my mobile in. and the following box opens up.

apple mobile device USB driver - ready to use
apple mobile device Ethernet - FAILED

i am looking to connect my phone to my laptop to use to tether for the internet.

i am using windows vista, SP2

i never had a problem with my other laptop on windows 7

any help
 
Different USB port or different cable. Restart computer? Basic stuff like that frequently fixes small problems.
