problem with hal.dll

just recently my dell said windows cannot find systemroot/system32/hal.dll

I would usually just put the windows xp cd in the drive and pull the files off but my cdrom is not working.

I made the windows xp boot disks but then I get another error message unmountable_boot_volume.

I put the drive in another machine and the drive can't be read. the bos recognizes the drive fine in the new machine but windows doesn't.

Do i need to change the hard drive or can it be recovered?

Here are three links to sites that are about this problem...

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000490.htm
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/pcrepair/a/missinghal_dll.htm

Now these probably won't help because of what you said in your post. So...your best bet is to buy a new CD drive. A regular old cd drive is dirt cheap these days and really easy to install.

Also, here is a link to download hal.dll - Maybe try copying that to your system32 folder.
