problem with horizontal motion on a HP mouse

Had a problem last week with my mouse only moving vertically and not horizontally. I took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together, and it seemed fixed.

Now this week, same problem, only when I take it apart it's already clean and even when I move the horizontal "roller" manually nothing happened.

I was able to pull a couple tiny fibers off the sensor (next to the "gear" that spins when the mouse ball moves) with some tweezers, and that helped some, but horizontal motion is still only intermittent. (sorry, I have no idea of the correct terminology for all this)

In order to make it work I've had to keep the cover off the mouse and shoot the sensor with canned air every time it stops working. That works for a while, then it stops working again. There are no visible dust particles or fibers inside the mouse.

I was wondering if there is something (besides canned air) that I could use to clean the horizontal sensor?? (I'm thinking along the lines of a cotton swab dipped in something ... ??)

I know it sounds like a lot of trouble to go through and that I should just buy another mouse, but for the next 2 weeks until graduation I'm still a broke college student, and I'd rather not buy another cause I have tons of extra ones at home (8 hours away though, so I can't just switch it out), and I don't need to add one more to the pile!

Thanks for reading, and any help would be appreciated!

Just blow into the mouse hole, when the ball is removed. There is probably some film or !GUNK! on the other side of the wheel. If not, maybe youll get a optical mouse for graduation! That would be swell...
