problem with laptop screen

Hi all - I hope someone can help me. My neighbor (14 years old) got her first laptop in May (used) but now it has a problem and I am trying to help her out. The bottom two thirds of the screen looks like you are looking at it through smoked glass. You can vaguely see the outline of windows, but that is about it.
It is a Dell Latitude D400. I went to the Dell site to see if I could download a driver update, under "Video" they had two listed, both said importance - Optional. It seems to me the driver for the screen would be essential, not optional. Am I missing something?

Its either

a. The screen is cracked, when the laptop is switched off can you see a line running through the screen where it goes "grey" when on?

b. The lead may have come loose at the back of the screen. Although only a 5 minute job for those that know how, I wouldnt like to try and talk someone through this procedure

It's not likely this is a driver issue, most likely a screen issue or video card issue and would need to get replaced. You can try downloading the driver but you would have to know which one is currently in the laptop. Go into device manager and look under display and see what is listed, then download the driver that matches it.
