Problem with Motherboard?

I recently moved my computer from an old emachines case to a case with better cooling. Everything works great except my videocard.

The reason I am suspicious of the motherboard is because I had a 7800GT overheat in the PCI-e slot. The card had white residue coming out from under the heatsink, and it was even bent a little bit.

Now I have a 7950GT to replace it, and there was no picture on the monitor when i had it plugged in, but everything works fine with on-board video. I checked in my BIOS to make sure that my primary graphics were set to PCI-e and it was.

I was wondering if there could be an issue with my PCI-e slot, which would mean purchasing a new motherboard :( or if there is something I could have missed?

Thanks in advance.

yes i admit im a bit odd. i came from earth =) . and if he maxed out the power supply, why would it work before when he had it in its origional case =)

my PSU is 600w so i dont think that is an issue. and no i dont have anotherh pci-e card to test.

are there any other things i can try before i buy a new motherboard?

thanks
