problem with multiple USB Controllers

I have an old Laptop (WinXPpro) that has two USB ports. I've connected a USB hub to it to connect 4 USB controllers to it. Unfortunately it doesn't work properly. If I put 3 controllers into the Hub two of them are identified as the same controller. Right now I have the following situation: Controller 1 (J0) is in USB port 1 and the other 3 controllers are in the Hub which is in USB Port 2. I should have J0, J1, J2 and J3, but instead what I have is: J0, J1, J1, J2. Why is that and what can I do to fix it?

Is it actually a problem?

Generally, a USB controller handles two ports, which is why you always seem to find USB ports clustered in groups of two.

Now, if I understand you correctly, you have something plugged into USB port 1 on the computer, then a USB hub in port 2.

Then you have three items plugged into the USB hub, which has four ports. Am I correct so far?

You're correct although the USB hub has eight ports three of which have USB controllers in them.
P.S. That's odd. I've tired it again today and it worked. Thanks anyway ^_^"
