Problem with my *BRAND NEW* Computer.

so my computer started acting funny.. which was disturbing to me because i bought it brand new back in late july.

it's a Gateway Dx4840 series:
Intel® Core™ i5
Windows® 7
6GB DDR3 memory
1TB hard drive1

what i first noticed is that when i would save a picture from the internet to the hard drive, instead of it being instantaneous, it took a second, then i would here the hard drive spinning.. and then it would save. this was obviously not normal. so i restarted my computer thinking maybe it just needed a break (i had only been on it for maybe 2 hours at that point)

after it rebooted, i went to my documents, and tried clicking on stuff to get the hard drive working... and sure enough, it was still lagging and making noise. from there i went to troubleshoot online.. normally i use google chrome, but when i click on my chrome icon, a popup window came up and told me it wasnt responding...?

that's when i did a drive error check (from properties->tools), which tool several hours to complete.. it was only at 45% completion when it was 12am. so i went to sleep, checked it this morning, and i still have the same problem.

so now i am at work, coming here for help before i take it back to the computer store for warranty.

is there anything i can do/try to fix this myself??? any help or tips are greatly appreciated!!

Have you defragged at all in the time you have had it? If not, do so, it is probably more of an inefficiency issue than any sort of issue. Use defraggler rather than the one which comes with Windows, it is much better, and run it a few times, one after the other. You can download it from here:

thx for that... i will try it when i get home...

another thing, google chrome quit working on my computer? i unistalled it and reinstalled it... nothing!?!?!?

well after days of trouble shooting with the support team for gateway, it seems that the only explanation is hardware failure..

i now have to send off the computer for repairs... :(

luckily i have 3 more computers...
