Problem with potable HD reading files

I have a 320gb WD portable hard drive (was FAT32 but i converted it to NTFS after the files could not be read). Anyway I copied some files (videos etc) off a mates computer (Win XP, ??), and when i came back to mine (Vista, NTFS) the files are not able to be seen? The space is taken and they are not hidden so i have no idea what the problem is? I had a recovery program which showed their names etc, and that they are actually there, but because it wasnt registered i could not do anything with them. Any ideas? Thanks in advance :D

Did you eject the drive and all before removing it? It sounds like the files are incomplete. Windows XP and it's delay-write is pretty notorious for not completely writing files to USB devices if they are not stopped/ejected. You could try something like chkdisk or recovery programs as you mentioned, but I suspect the files are incomplete and will need to be recopied.

That sounds like a possibility, although if i remember correctly it has has happened before and when i plugged it into a different computer again (XP) they were visible and totally fine and i moved them into different folders which where after then readable by my computer?
