Problem with potable HD reading files

I have a 320gb WD portable hard drive (was FAT32 but i converted it to NTFS after the files could not be read). Anyway I copied some files (videos etc) off a mates computer (Win XP, ??), and when i came back to mine (Vista, NTFS) the files are not able to be seen? The space is taken and they are not hidden so i have no idea what the problem is? I had a recovery program which showed their names etc, and that they are actually there, but because it wasnt registered i could not do anything with them. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Did you eject the drive and all before removing it? It sounds like the files are incomplete. Windows XP and it's delay-write is pretty notorious for not completely writing files to USB devices if they are not stopped/ejected. You could try something like chkdisk or recovery programs as you mentioned, but I suspect the files are incomplete and will need to be recopied.

That sounds like a possibility, although if i remember correctly it has has happened before and when i plugged it into a different computer again (XP) they were visible and totally fine and i moved them into different folders which where after then readable by my computer?
