Problem with screen not turning on - Dell Latitude D630

All,

A friend has asked me to take a look at his laptop.

Although the laptop works and turns on (i can hear the xp music etc) nothing is displayed on the screen.

When i plug the laptop into a stand alone monitor the screen shows but it is very distort and will only let me set the colour quality in display settings to 4bit.

Can anyone please help?

if he has a discrete video card than it is borked. if he has onboard video than it is borked as well. he either needs to get a new video card or a new laptop
 
When you turn the computer on do you see anything on the screen and then go black or is black as soon as you turn it on? If its black and you never see anything on it then the video is bad on it. However, if you see the post screen and then goes black then its most likely a corrupted driver. Boot to safe mode and see if it works in there.
