Problem with Windows Live Messenger on XP Home

Hi all,

I went to a friend's house last night and they asked if I could help fix their live messenger signing in. I checked their firewall and sure enough, it was blocking them logging in. I changed the setting and it allowed them to log in. Then the strangest thing keeps happening now that I've never come across. As soon as they sign into any email address on Windows Live Messenger, the program just crashes straight away. It doesn't even give a "Not Responding" message. It just closes and you have to start the program up again. The program loads fine and doesn't crash at the login screen but as soon as you successfully log in, boom it crashes. I've tried uninstalling the program, removing any trace of Windows Live and installing it again, nothing works. I hope that someone can help with a list of things to help me get them back online. So frustrating

Thanks in advance.

Look in the event viewer under applications for any entries describing why the program terminated.

is it an old messenger or the new 2011 version, ive found the new 2011 messenger to be a pain that doesnt work.

apart from that have you tried removing all windows live product, then running some system cleaning tools, then do a virus check, as a temp solution try the portable non install version of messenger can run from a usb stick or just stick it on desktop.
