problem with windows xp, please help

a lot of the chinese softwares that i installed can't be read, it's all weird symbols instead of proper chinese characters. so i can't use a lot of my chinese softwares. i'm currently using windows xp, but i had the same problem with i used windows 98 and 2000. how do i resolve this problem? do i need to have windows xp the chinese version to read the characters properly?

Try Start, control panels, font (select your font)

if i change my windows font, i still need to change back to english, so which font is the default windows font?
