problem with WMP 11 and movies

I am having trouble with my movies and WMP 11. I use WMP 11 to manage my movies and every time I go to the movies, I get an error message saying it needs to close after a second or two.

I have tried to delete them out of the library but when I go back they are still there. I also moved the folder that the movies are stored in and removed the folder from the watch list and I can still double click on them and start them before it closes. I figured it would say can't play the file because it is missing. Am I wrong on that part?

I can go everywhere else, music, pics, etc just not the movies. I can use Realplayer to play them without any trouble.

I hope I explained clearly enough.
 
With XP WMP 10 will outperform the Vista geared WMP 11. With both 32bit versions of Home and Pro here along with Vista running 11 default 9 was upgraded to 11 and then back to 10. I finally managed to get 10 to install on XP Pro and that's where it will stay. I close out the update prompt to keep 11 off of the two XPs while being stuck with 11 in Vista. WMP 10 surprised me with good support for video playback.
 
I was using WMP 10 but after started using WMP 11, I like the looks and layout of it so much better. There are some small things I don't like besides the problem is in the library it does not tell you how many items you have in there unless you highlight them all and even then it only shows it for a couple of seconds.

I may try and reinstall WMP 11 and if that doesn't work I will go back to WMP 10. How would I go back to WMP 10?
 
To get back to 10 first download a copy and save it to a folder since you have to remove 11 first. Once you have a copy go into the "add/remove Windows components" section found in the "add/remove programs". You will see a list of items with check marks next to the ones installed on the system there. All you do is uncheck the WMP item seen and click the ok button. Windows will then automatically remove everything. From there you simply install 10 as a new program.

If you are running XP Pro you may have to try this a few times before it goes on. It was easy with the Home version. But both have it running. The 11 version has the "Vista look" that many rave about. But it actually geared more to Vista then XP. And the lack of the right column for listing in the Now Playing section tells the rest!
 
What are you talking about when you say the lack of the right column for listing in the Now Playing section tells the rest? Are you talking about the column that shows all the songs or whatever? If so, mine has that column.
 
That's if you have the show list pane checked off in the dropdown menu found on the Now Playing button. You will find that this will be unchecked by default if and when you install Vista. The main thing it lacks over the WMP 10 version however that's even more annoying is no link for opening playlists you have already saved. You have to go upto the file option on the menu bar if you have that vsible and click the open file option to open one from the list there where 10 like the previous versions has the dropdown at the show list pane.
 
Well I just tried to install WMP 10 but it said it is incompatible with the version of Windows I am using. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2. Will I not be able to use WMP 10?

I tried something else. I went to add/remove programs list and clicked on remove for WMP 11 and it rolledback to the previous version I was using, which is WMP 10 but it installed WMP 9 instead. Why won't WMP 10 work on my machine?

I bought the Windows that I am using from somebody that I know that works in a school library and got it for 10 bucks. On the disk it says November 4 Systems Student Media. Would that have anything to do with it?

On the Pro version of XP here I had to try a few times before it would finally go on. But you simply rolled back to WMP 9. The add/remove Windows components method totally removes WMP altogether for the clean install of 10. That's how to get 10 on after removing 11. This is where you got caught. I first tried reverting to 10 from 11 and gave up fast until removing "everything"! It worked!
 
I don't understand. I unchecked the box for WMP after I downloaded the setup for WMP 10 and tried to install WMP 10 several times but would not install so that is when I went to add/remove programs.

How do I get WMP 10 on my system? I may just keep WMP 9 because it is working so far.

What do you mean by removing everything? Do you mean you had to reinstall windows?

The idea of unchecking WMP in the add/remove Windows components section is to see everything WMP related totally removed. You don't reinstall Windows but perform a clean install of WMP 10. It's a little touchy at first with the Pro version but it works. If you had the default 9 add try to get 10 on Home it will go right on. With the Pro version 9 has to removed first. That's the pain in the .... you have to put up with. :rolleyes:

If you ever do have to reinstall Pro for some reason remove 9 first the same way again. I found that little trick when insisting I was going to have 10 not 9 or 11 there. :D Just don't choose the express method for updates after. Use the custom method when downloading any further updates for XP since one will be for WMP 11.
 
I have done what you said to do. I downloaded MP10 Setup first, then I unchecked the box for WMP under add/remove windows components, then I try to install WMP 10. When I double click on the icon for MP10 Setup, it starts extracting the files then gives me an error message which will be posted below.

Now you know exactly why I mentioned it was a pain in the... to get 10 to go on Pro. Make sure you have shutdown any antivirus or firewalls when trying this. You want only the basic OS running. I ran into that but eventually it did go on. If you really get stumped use the msconfig utility to disable items seen in the startup group there and restart the system.

It took a few tries at different times to see it finally go on. But has worked trouble free since. With a quick look at the desktop there I couldn't help notice you downloaded it to the desktop. Here I downloaded it directly into a totally separate folder unrelated to any created by Windows. That wouldn't normally be a problem but something is causing that message to come up. 10 is quite compatible with the 32bit version of XP Pro wirh SP2. You already had the WMP 11 version on showing that. But Pro is a little more stubborn for this then the Home version.
 
I appreciate your help so far. I don't know what you mean by disabling items in the startup group. What items are you talking about?

I downloaded another copy of the setup to my second drive. I just have not deleted the one on the desktop yet.
 
If you are not familiar with the msconfig untility you would open the tool seen in Windows since 98 for selective startup when going to troubleshoot problems being seen in Windows. You simply type msconfig at the Run prompt off of the Start menu and press enter/return to bring up the screen for this with several tabs across the top.

The startup group is the last on the right side as you can see from the screen capture here. Once you are able to get WMP 10 on you can easily place a check mark next to any of the items you disable. To put the changes into effect you will have to restart the system after you click the apply button. Once Windows reaches the desktop you then simply place a check in the don't show this again box for the popup that appears each time the msconfig utility is used.

Hopefully you can get it on in one try there. With XP Pro on a sata while running Home and Vista on the ide drives it took a few shutdowns and startup to see it suddenly go on.

 
Anything that could hamper installing any program like a firewall or antivirus program would be top on the list. For the purpose of seeing 10 go on temporarily choosing the disable all won't hurt anything but be more inconvenient. That leaves Windows free to focus on installin media player without possible interference from something else. Mostly this would be a last resort not knowing your software environment there.
 
I am still not having any luck installing WMP 10. I ran msconfig and under the general tab, I selected Diagnostic startup and still did not work. PC eye, can you tell me exactly what you did to get it working? I am getting frustrated.
 
I may have been the most fortunate ??? whatever when it did go on. Who knows? For a step by step method with exact details the steps I outlined earlier were the ones taken to suddenly see 10 go on without problems. It may have been a fluke. This is why I warned it may be a real pain in the ...? to see it happen there too.
