Problem

Hello

I recently bought a new monitor. If I turn off the monitor for a few hours and then come back and turn it back on, I get a blue screen saying I get an error. I do not have time to read what the error says because after a second or two, my computer restarts.

Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks.

That sounds more like a system problem where the message would be no signal detected and the initial redetection of the monitor is a likely reason there. Something may be pulling on power like a weak video card if no Windows or driver problems are found.

Driver problems as well as hardware faults can see unexpected restarts at times. With nothing running however you may be looking at a possible defect with the new monitor itself since that can't be ruled out while that wouldn't explain the restarts since that is powered externally.

Have you tried leaving the monitor on and going to power options in control panel and set it to turn off the monitor after so long. If you havent updated your video card drivers and chipset drivers, do so.

By default the turn display off after 20 minutes is usually found enabled. But even when a monitor goes into sleep and restores you shouldn't be seeing an unexpected restart of the system itself. Have you monitored your system temps at all like cpu, board, etc. there?

The latest version of PC Wizard 2008 on the first link is good and more accurately reading cpu and other temps here when compared to readings by SpeedFan another free program when looking at the hardware monitor in the bios. It runs easily on Vista as well as XP.

Sandra or Sandra Lite is an older diagnostic benchmarking program there. You will see that being mentioned at web site for some schools at times. SiSoftware is a good software company producing that one.

The other program SpeedFan is a smaller utility will the option to select items on a temp chart as well as readings from the board's temp sensors for cpu, board, and drive temps. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Unfortunately SpeedFan and the no longer free version of Everest have been known to give off false high temps. The Temp Probe II utility for Asus boards on the other hand has worked even on other brands for some found at the Asus support site. The main idea here however is to see if you are having a temp problem of some type causing the system to restart as part of the overheat protection process.

That would be helpfull if thats was what he was doing. He was just turning it off.

I know that. But even if he was letting the monitor simply go into standby mode and was seeing it fail to revive that wouldn't explain why the system itself was seeing sudden restarts. The monitor itself has it's own ac power source completely independent from the main case.
