Problem

Windows XP and was using Firefox latest release or whatever.

Now when I click on the icons on my desk top nothing happens, zilch etc.

Got here by using IE and the search facility on it.

Any ideas what's wrong and how to correct it.

I've tried a system restore, back a week, but same problem.

I've run Ad Aware, Spybot and AVG but the only thing that turns up is the Java/Byte/Verify virus thing. Which I don't know how to delete.

And PC sounds like it's working flat out.

Do you know the actual name of the virus???
If you know the virus name post it here then I will give you manual instruction to delete it

Byte verify, usually java based...

1. Turn off System restore (rightclick "MyComputer"/Properties/system restore)
2. Download CCleaner install it and run it.
3. UPDATE your AVG, reboot to safemode (press F8 while booting up) and run a full system scan.

You should be ok from there... :)

PS. if your running SUN java, you could go to control panel, java, delete temporary files. CCleaner should take care of it, but just in case...

Byteman, do you know the actual name of this virus?? that way I can find the instructions to remove them in my database. (My database is all listed with the actual names of the virus (e.g. W32.Sasser.Worm) )

byte verify is a trojan horse, depending on which antivirus software you use the names will differ (ie: symantec may call it Trojan.ByteVerify, and McAfee Exploit-ByteVerify and Kaspersky Exploit.Java.Bytverify and Trendmicro JAVA_BYTVERIFY.A). so basically you'd have to have all the different manufacturer's names for given malware in the database or at least know which AV program he's using...

Not to get off topic, this is a trojan that most AV programs will take care of just fine, I'm not sure why his AVG didn't do it the first time, but following my instructions above, should take care of it, we'll have to see...

Lone Wolf, if you would rather get instructions from Hellbreather, by all means do so :)
