Problem

Sorry guys, noob here, don't even know if I'm in the right place and I'm not computer lingo savvy.

Have a HP Pavilion a1510n, fan is whirring every time I click on anything that requires a download from the internet, even accessing a thread here.

And usually once the computer has been on a while, if I access a site such as Google maps and bring in a satellite picture, or a PDF file, it will lock up.

I know I have a problem, just don't know what it is.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like RAM or CPU. Did the HP come with any hardware diagnostic CD? If not, give them a call and they might be able to send you one. Best thing you can do is test your parts to see if anything comes back as faulty.

Yeah, definitely sounds like a lack of RAM or something. How old is the computer?

Thanks for responding, I'm in the dark here, moved recently, if there was a disc, probably threw that out. Computer is about 4-5 years old, probably ancient now.

Only showing about 14% usage, 86% capacity not used.

Used a "cleaner" disc, defragged, deleted all the old files, games, pictures, junk I don't need. The internet source is cable and since the removing of that stuff, it has gotten quite faster. Every time the computer is thinking, or the bar moves showing activity, that's when the fan comes on. Just now writing this script, the fan whirs for a second or two. I don't mind the whirring too much, is when it locks up just accessing normal internet site, that's the problem. It seems that happens when the computer is left on for longer periods, 8-10 hours or so. Sorry if I'm not any clearer.

Thanks again.
