Problems booting up.

Recently i had a memory problem, couldn't recognize one of the RAM sticks. so now i am trying to use a 1Gb RAM stick in there. i took out both 256mb and placed in the 1gb. on start-up the POST says it recognizes the RAM and goes past the bios screen to a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top left. im not sure whut the problem is since it apperantly isn't the RAM anymore since it was recognized...
 
i was messing with the two 256's and found that if i put the good one "one that works" in it will go to either the blue screen or the safe mode screen. but if i use the good one and faulty one together it seems to boot fine, but only will recognize 256 of it. when just putting the 1gb alone in either slot it seems to go to the blank screen
 
Right now it seems like a bad stick of ram but lets not get ahead of ourselves. What type of ram is it and what is your mobo model. Links would be nice.
 
the second slot brings me to a blank screen as well. the mobo is a AMD AThalon at 1.61 Ghz, and the 1gb is 400mhz DDR memory. i beleive both 256 are DDR @ 400mhz
