problems displaying fr PC to HD TV

I'm trying to feed laptop to tv. I've got an HDMI connection and I get a good image on the tv, but even though the laptop is 16:9, no matter what I do the image on the tv is square.
When I use the function key combo for a remote monitor, the image is 16:9 but there's no sound. argh.... Help, please....
 
I'm confused on what you are asking. It is coming up on the TV, but the image isn't taking up the whole TV?
 
Correct Dave. The PC display is 16:9 but the image that appears on the TV screen, although sharp is cropped horizontally to make more of a square

Unfortunately, I'm limited in the time I have to try this and try that unless you have seen this before and are confident that this is probably the problem; secondly, I just ordered a new laptop for myself (the problem described is on my wife's laptop) and I want to try it out first. I only need one to work.
 
Solution: used the switch to remote monitor function key combo; cycled to remote monitor only; and it worked.... BUT, had to change audio output to the HDMI from the speaker jack to get audio.
