i recently came accross a hp a6400z for a business owner, she asked me to downgrade back to xp, the install seemed to work fine, as the xp pro install cd found the hard drive, formatted it, then copied all the install files without incident, however after rebooting, i find myself in an endless reboot loop... when i boot back into the cd and use repair console i am able to see the windows files and everything as intended, it's as if it's not recognzing xp's boot file, and somehow attempting to use vista's without vista being on the hard drive any longer, i tried rewriting the bootcfg to no avail, please help.

You'll need to find XP drivers for the hardware on that PC.
If you can't, you'll need to reinstall Vista.

That's possible! Tom The HP product page shows two options for Vista or the two for upgrading to Vista with SP1 at http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...e_type=cto_config&config_id=160413&aoid=14077

That would be except for the bad news of ,,,

If what you were looking for is not listed, then it is not available for downloading from the web in this language.

That's exactly what I'd seen, PCeye. Pretty discouraging.

Digging a bit deeper, I did find that some of the motherboard components may support XP:

The nForce chipset and integrated graphics, AMD AM2-socket processor, and the two standard PCI sockets tell me that MAYBE XP could be supported... but I sure wouldn't want to be the one to bork the board by trying it my own self.

It's not so much a part of damaging a board except for the hardware monitor and overheat protection circuit that may still need something there for some of that. The other onboard items like memory, ide, sata controllers along with the chipset play the larger role trying to run Windows without the necessary drivers found.

If you look carefully enough you'll find that most boards found in prebuilds won't be seen being sold at newegg, TigerDirect, and other vendors in general for use on custom cases since those are primarily ordered by one large company. Once the next version of Windows is out forget any active support for XP on prebuilds period. The only reason it is still supported mainly is the 3yr. delay Vista saw extending XP.
