Hey,

I just bought a 1650x pro Radeon graphics card and im trying to install it. After downloading the newest drivers from ati and installing them.. i try to play games and it tells me fail to render. So... i ran dxdiag and i did the 3d test.. it comes up on all 3 tests Failed on stage 8. I tried to re-install directx and that didnt help. Previously i had a geforce-2 and i uninstalled the drivers.. but when i popped the ge-force back in.. i guess it still picked them up. So when i went to the device manager and tried to right click and uninstall, it tells me failed to uninstall because the item may be needed to boot the computer. I have tried all that i know to my knowledge, can anyone help me fix this problem? Or have any suggestions as to what i can do?

Thanks,
Konrad

You first have to download the driver removal tool from NVidia if you don't find that in a utility folder on the software disk or in the installation folder on the hard drive itself. The first thing to do whenever swapping cards out is remove the current driver set with the tool provided by one or the other.

I paid a visit to the nvidia support site and the removal tools only went back so far not far enough for a GeForce 2 series card there. You will have to look on the software disk that came with the card or use something like Driver Magician(Retail) that can remove both NVidia and ATI drivers alike.

It can be a real pain when drivers won't go on right or are hard to get rid of. I ran into that on the new build here when the drivers on the software disk as well as the 7.9 version of the ATI catalyst were bad to begin with. The 7.10 corrected the problems in Vista while it took the latest 7.11 for XP on the new DX10 compatible card here.

The other "last" option depends on how long Windows has been installed in order to use the repair install option and then see a fresh set of ATI drivers for the newer card there. If Windows hasn't been on long enough however the option for repairing the current installation won't be seen meaning a full reinstall if no other driver removal tool works.
