I completed building a new computer but cannot install Windows 98SE. The reason I want to install
Windows98SE is that I did it many times in the past whenever I formatted my harddrive.Later I will
upgrde to XP.Below is my procedure and the reults I got.

1) Start computer with W98SE boot floppy.
2) Start computer with CD-ROM support yes
3) PCI bus scan complete
4) Message :Diagnostic tools loaded to drive D
5) Message: Drive E = Driver MSCD001 unit0
6) Changes to A prompt.

7) C: type dir Result: Message Invalid media type reading drive c
d: type dir Result: Message Volume in drive D is MS-Ramdrive
e: type dir Result: Message Volume in drive E is Win98

8) From E prompt I type setup and hit Enter
Message pops up:

Please wait while Setup initializes
Scanning system registry
Windows Set up requires 734003

No further actions except a flashing bar under the messages...After waiting for 20 min
I turned the computer off.

9) At A prompt:
Type FDISK
A large message appears, beginning with "Your computer has a disk larger than 512MB etc etc
At the end:

Do you wish to enable large disk support ( y/n) I chose yes and got following message:
Choose:
1) Create DOD partition or Logical DOS Drive
2) Set active partition
3) Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
4) Display partition info

As I am not sure what to do I selected 4)
Message appears:

Current fixed disk drive: 1
Partition Status Type VolumeLabel Mbyte System Usage
1 A PriDOS 18186 unknown 100 %

Does anybody have an idea what is wrong ?
Your help is appreciated.

select option 3 and delete all partitions. This will delete all information on the hard drive. then select option 1 to create a primary partition. Make the primary partition less then 32GB. Then you will restart the computer. The setup should work then.

Some system specs would be a help in determining the actual problem. If this is being tried on a system with more then 512mb of memory installed you will immediately run into a snag there. The two methods for seeing 98SE go on with more then 512mb of memory are:

1)edit the system.ini file according to the information seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253912/en-us?spid=1139&sid=375

2)proven more effective in actual use depends on the edit of the autoexec.bat file while at a dos prompt once booted with the startup floppy. Under the 386ENH section raise the MaxPhysPage = 10000 upto 30000 or larger there then exit and save the change made. That will get you past the initial problems of getting 98 to the desktop with 1gb or more of memory installed.

For 98 to go on when using the fdisk tool you would first need a blank drive or have removed the previous NTFS type primary. You would then choose the first option to see a new Fat32 primary created.

For drives over 64gb in size the updated version of fdisk http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263044 won't be any help unless a second partition is being planned with an 80gb or larger drive. This is where a 3rd party drive partitioning tool comes in. 98SE was easily run here seeing a single primary on a 250gb ide drive with the help of WD's DrFat32.

For simply seeing XP go on without the need for the 98 intermediary when using an XP upgrade disk a single XP boot floppy can see that done. Plus you see NTFS instead of Fat32 as the primary. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall
