Problems Upgrading CPU

Recently I upgraded my cpu on a ASUS M2N-E AM2 motherboard.

I tried upgrading my outdated AMD 3800+ to a AMD X2 5000+ processor.

However I had problems trying to remove the stock heatsink/fan from the processor, it seems that the thermal paste had made it stuck fast. So after reading replies on the forum I used a hairdryer and twisted out the stock heatsink/fan.

I then installed the new processor and heatsink/fan on to the motherboard with minimal fuss. When I booted up the pc nothing came up on the screen, there was no beeping sound and there was no sound of processor activity coming from the pc. However, the case lights/fan came on and the cpu fan and motherboard light were on.

I then put the old processor back in to see if the new processor was faulty, but that didnt work either.

I would be grateful for any suggestions as we are lost. Is it possible that I damaged the motherboard while trying to remove the heatsink/fan/processor? If I have, are the other components damaged?

Regards,
Chris

Did you look at the bottom of the old CPU to make sure all the pins are there? Plus look at the CPU socket and make sure its not cracked or anything? Did you plug back in the CPU fan connector? Plugged in the CPU 4/8 pin power connector.

How aggressive were you by twisting it...

You may have bent, broken, or damaged something yes,,that is a possibility.

..first off...did you double check the cpu is seated properly?

lesson learned, don't use thermal paste, use thermal compound. coollaboratory is good though if you plan on building a computer without ever upgrading the processor.

The fan connector was plugged in and the cpu pins showed no abnormalities.

I usually just unlock the HSF and pull straight up gently until it removes itself from the socket.

Actually I found that the fan was in lock position for some reason  making it more difficult to remove.

If the motherboard is broken, will other components be affected?

...Umm I read your post before the warning in your sig.....I don't really want to agree now..
Too bad, it's too late. You already read it, you have to...if you don't want to agree, c'ya in court (mwahahahaa*cough*hahaha...)

Probably not. It's very rare to see a mobo take out other components when it dies, though it's not unheard of.

When you did this did the CPU stay stuck to the heatsink and pull off with it or did the heatsink come loose and you lifted the lever and removed the CPU separate..

Plus I dont know what X2 5000 you have, there is like 6 bios updates for the X2 5000 on that board. Try resetting the bios with the old CPU in and see if it boots. If so update the bios to the latest one and try the 5000 again.
