Problems with HP laptop and SD card

So, I just got my mom's old hp pavilion zv5000 laptop for Christmas. It's about 5 years old, so I've been having some issues with it. Whenever I insert my 2GB SD card, a popup with a flashlight on it comes up and says autoplay. If I try to view the card through My Computer, it freezes it up, and I can't view the contents of that card. What should I do to remedy this problem? I don't really know much about computers, just as a heads up.

Then it is probably an issue with the card reader itself (hardware), or it could be a driver issue (software). Check HP's website for current drivers for you laptop. Give that a shot first.

Also, if it has never been done, it probably wouldn't hurt to wipe the laptop and start from the factory settings - i.e. re-install everything.

I'm gonna have a friend help me wipe everything off and re-install everything sometime soon...I'm not going to try too hard to fix it until after that.

That may end up fixing your card reader issue (and several others) as long as it isn't a hardware problem. Let us know how that turns out.
