Problems with Internet Explorer & Outlook Express

I'm having a problem with both IE6 and Outlook Express, which seems to have started when I installed and them uninstalled the IE7 Beta. My IE 6 is demonstrating the following symptoms:
- It will not allow me to open a website in a new window
- It won't print
- it won't let me access scroll bars within websites
- when I click on a message in my Outlook webmail, it won't open, but a little message in the lower left hand corner says "Error on Page"

Outlook express won't print (when you press "File" -> "Print", nothing happens), and it won't go to hyperlinks. We are having the same problem on IncrediMail, which is basically a fancied-up Outlook Express.

The attempted fixes I have tried so far have included:
- disabling the pop-up blocker
- Run IEFix
- Disabled all start up routines in configsys (in case there were some security conflicts)
- Uninstalled & reinstalled IE6

So far, nothing has worked.

I'm using Firefox & Thunderbird for now, but I need IE because it is the most compatable with my Webmail for work. Also, my family uses Outlook Express & Incredimail as their E-mail clients.

Any help would be greatly appreciated ...

Thanks!!

does your firefox print out ? if not, then i believe it's a windows issue.
printing routines are handled by os.
what sp are you running ?
still you could try to goto system/software and choose add/remove windows components. re-install ie7 and try to remove with component functions.
IE7 1st test result: after 14 minutes tester went into the system by using secure leekings ! stay on IE6 + sp
good luck
ciao

I'm sorry to hear this about IE 7.0 since I've had it running here since it first came available. Other then appearance and the lack of the "send link" option it has been running just as normal as IE 6.0 was. But it's still a beta. I would first download the IE setup for 6.0 before removing IE completely in control panel. This way you can connect direct when reinstalling IE and Outlook Express. When installing IE 7.0 did you allow it to upgrade 6.0? Or did you try installing it as a separate browser? When 7.0 went on here it automatically took all settings including favorites and has been running normal since.

Thanks for the responses. It is definitely a Windows issue, because Firefox works fine in every way (as does Thunderbird). I'm running XP Pro - SP2 ... the Operating System is fully updated. When I installed IE7 I didn't install it as a separate browser. I'll try reinstalling & then uninstalling using Windows Components & I'll report back.
Thanks again!!

You will probably have to download a fresh IE copy using Firefox since you will want to fully uninstall both IE and Outllook. You can run a free system registry cleaner to remove any orphan values left there a freeware called RegCleaner or RegScrub. RegCleaner has been used here and works on just about every version of Windows. You can grab that at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html Use the regcleaner "do them all" option on the side dropdown menu.

Hi there ... thanks again to everyone for your help. I've run all of the fixes suggested, and I am being confronted with a very weird problem, which may explain why none of the other fixes have worked. I uninstalled IE6 & Outlook Express through "Control Panel" -> "Add or Remove Programs" -> "Add/Remove Windows Components", & I downloaded the IE6 Setup files through the Microsoft site. I then ran a couple of registry cleanup programs. I ensured that my version of XP was completely updated. Finally, I rebooted just for good measure.

When I tried to install IE6, it told me that a newer version was on my computer & that the install could not continue. I went into my Program Files folder, and sure enough ... there were folders for both IE & Outlook Express! So I figured that I'd just go in & detete the files manually. Here's the really weird part ... I did that ... and the files reappeared!! One second they're gone, & the next second, they're back! So now I wonder if I should posted to an exorcism forum!!

By the way, I tried to find a restore point prior to my downloading IE6, and none seem to be there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time & interest!!

Note the third link applies mainly to NT, 9X-ME but may be one method if the first can't get you through. The last shows how to identify the actual version that is installed. The others are from the IE support and troubleshooting pages. Since IE is incorporated into Windows itself a registry cleaner wouldn't be expected to work while an experienced hand would be able to manually locate and remove all IE values "with caution". If you want to look through additional MS links, http://search.microsoft.com/results...ng=en-US&q=uninstalling+internet+explorer+6.0

Thanks for the suggestions ... I reviewed all of the links suggested. Since my last post I have reinstalled SP2 & installed & uninstalled IE7. The result:
- IE7 still didn't work
- IE6 won't work
- I have completely lost Outlook Express (I get the message "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOERES.DLL could not be found"). I have tried reinstalling, but nothing changes.

I am pretty much ready to give up. Am I missing anything?

Thanks again!!

At this point you would have to totally remove any traces of IE and Outlook along with running a good registry cleaner. Then you would start with a fresh download of IE 6.0 to try again. This would be the means of replacing all that comes along with both IE and Outlook. If that still fails to see results you may forced into what is named an "install to repair" to see Windows and IE 6.0 in full working order again. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm does have to read through and followed in detail. The method outlined here will not wipe out all of your files and folders while often only needing video and sound reinstalled.
Microsoft has their own IE support pages starting here. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;ie
The last one seems to be the closest to what you would need. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q318378

PC eye ... thanks for the links. I would like to completely eliminate any traces of IE & Outlook express & reinstall. The problem is that I have tried and I haven't been successful in doing that. I've gone into "Control Panel" -> "Add or Remove Programs" -> "Add/Remove Windows Components" & removed both IE & Outlook Express & I have run a couple of Registry Editors after that. IE & OE are still there, though! Is there anything I am not doing that I should be doing to get rid of them so I can completely reinstall them?
Thanks!

If you can't find what values are still left in the system registry that are probably being ignored by the cleaners since those would be recognised as MS and not third party the last option when nothing else sees results is to perform what is termed an "install to repair". If you are already familiar with this and have already performed this on the current installation you may not see that option available on the attempt this time. That would mean deleting the current installation without wiping the drive. But all programs, utilities, drivers, etc. would have to be reinstalled. That's a royal pain in...! Follow the detailed instructions seen in this article found at: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

It would stink to have to delete the current installation just to get IE running again that's for sure. First try a number of searches through the MS data base before the repair install to see if you find a solution there. You can also use different search engines besides Google, Yahoo, and MSN at times to get some good info. The repair install generally goes by in minutes due to the lessened volume of files being recopied to the drive. Then you simply refigure your settings in IE and Outlook to get connected again. Keep that link here in your favorites anyways. It was a well prepared article with easy to follow instructions.
