Problems with my Custom Build

I just built a new computer and I can't figure out what my problem is:

EVGA 780i SLi
E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA775
XFX 9800 GTX+ Black Edition
PC Power and Cooling 750w
1TB Western Digital HDD
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair 800 XMS2
Ultra eTorque ATX Mid-Tower

Everytime I boot up, the monitor stays in sleep mode and the mobo beeps once. Then the mobo 2-character readout says 7F. I looked online and I should have an image at this point. I asked my local computer store and they said it was the RAM. Originally I had Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) 1066 until I realized that my mobo needs 800. When I talked to the tech guys, I had the Patriot RAM in the computer, so I thought getting the new RAM would fix my problem. Unfortunately, it still won't work. Please help.

So we know one thing now...the computer store is packed full of morons and you shouldn't listen to them again.

Now first things first...that error could be many things but I have a idea of what it is.

Open your box up and reseat the ram and the gpu...make sure all the connectors are plugged into the motherboard and w/e else they are connecting to. Make sure the 24 pin is ALL the way in and make sure the 4/8 pin is connected to the motherboard.

Best case you forgot to plug one in and are now feeling semi-retarded...but hey it happens.

If that does not bare fruit then pop out your CMOS battery....resting the settings could prove handy.

CMOS battery looks like this (pay no attention to the yellow arrow)

Pop the battery out then hit the power button...then pop it back in to reset.

If that does not work then take all but one stick of ram out and move the ram from slot to slot and see if that is the issue.

If nothing above works my money is the motherboard is DOA.

*edit*
Just a thought after you get that message try hitting f1 , f2 esc or delete. 7F is a code 680i/780i boards give that means its waiting for user response so lemme know if doing so does anything. It could be a failure on the "default" settings of the BIOS with hardware on your PC.

missed that, to the op, look in the manual, it should say something about error codes, or phone up evga and talk to them

1 beep usually means everything is normal but maybe your video card isn't getting enough power. The 7F may relate. Some video cards have a power connector that has to be plugged in to the motherboard. Also, try your video card in the other SLI slot to test it in instead, and/or do you have a spare video card to see if you get output to the monitor?

Yeah didn't think of that GTX has 2 6 pin slots. Putting each of the 6 pins on different rails could also help.

The first thing to do in troubleshooting the problem is to reduce the computer to the basics. Disconnect everything so that all you have left is the mainboard, processor and memory. Connect you monitor to the mainboard's video connector and then boot. If it still doesn't boot then you know the problem is only a few places - most likely the mainboard. Troubleshooting this type of thing with a complete computer is difficult.

thanks for the help everyone, but i took it over to my friend's house and put in his 8800 gts and it worked, so i am returning my gpu. i would've tried that earlier, but thats the only gpu in my house (2 laptops and a desktop w/ integrated graphics) and the desktop w/ integrated graphics doesn't have the psu to handle putting my gpu in it :P Thanks for your help though. if this doesn't work (i pray it does), ill be back on.

image at this point

one option considering I don't think your evga has a mainboard video connector is to run with only one of the ram chips in and the video card in to see if you boot, to see if your even getting to the bios leave your keyboard unplugged, most boards will give you a second beep right before the bios to signify that it hasn't read one. If you get that far with no picture it is the video card or the slot since your board has multiple slots I would attempt the same thing with the rest of them. If you get video its your one or more of your ram chips, and trial and error will tell you which one it is.
