problems with P2P client (emule)...

Since installing a router to my machine I have had nothing but trouble with my P2P client, emule.

The main problem is that when emule is running, it is extremely difficult to navigate the web using internet explorer. Most pages take an absolute age to load and most of the time I get the "This page cannot be displayed..." error message.
It also seems like emule is downloading more slowly than it was before I installed the router.

At first I thought it was a problem with the ports being blocked by the router so I took steps to forward the ports and then ran a port test using emule which it passed with flying colours.

Now that the ports have been forwarded I can't think of why emule is causing such problems with my browser. Any ideas?

When running a p2p program, you will find that your bandwidth slows terribly. Even if just downloading, for every 10 packets received, your PC sends out 1 as an acknowledgement; this eats up your upload bandwidth and makes it difficult for your browser to send requests for web pages. If you download a lot, set emule to limit your upload speed; that will help. Also leave your PC on to download when you are not there, so you will not notice any slowdowns. Turn off emule when you use the PC again. I find that this is the best method

Yes but I had no problems running internet explorer whilst using emule with my old ISP. It has been since I changed ISP and installed the router that I have been having problems.

There must be some serious issue here because my browser isn't even able to load google.com. All I get is the "The page cannot be displayed..." error message with practically any page I try to visit.

I agree that leaving emule running when you are not at the PC is the most effective way to download. I often leave it running overnight and find that the big file you have been trying to D/L for ages has materialised in the shared files folder. However, since I changed my ISP and installed the router, whenever I leave emule running overnight, I come back in the morning to find that not only has emule disconnected, but so has any other application that uses the internet such as msn messenger.

Also, the upload limit was already limited to 12kB/sec out of a total available bandwidth of 26kB/sec and it used to cause no problems. Now, even though I've lowered it to 10kB/sec, I still can't use internet explorer.

This really sucks :-C

I used to get network disconnects while using emule (or was it edonkey?)
I use either Limewire or Shareaza and have little problem.

OK I've noticed that if I leave emule running for over 5 min's that it sorts itself out somehow and functions normally and even allows me to use IE at the same time with no prob's. It's only when I first run it that it causes problems. Funny, because it never used to cause problems at all.

OK I'm glad that's sorted. Thanks for showing me how to port forward onion! You live and learn.

shareaza

Just out of pure curiosity how is shareaza? I was using kazaa but I was getting virus's left and right, not that I didn't have any antivirus just that I was detecting them like crazy.....I was just wandering if it is as easy to use as kazaa and a little less stressful? :P

Kazaa Lite :)

Kazaa lite is nice :) and no spyware/adware. I also like ARES. Try that ...never had problems.

JAN :D

I would NEVER use Kazaa and Kazaa lite again. I had only trouble with it and you dont find what you want, get viruses, slows your PC etc. I would recommend "Bearshare". Its such a good programm and you have way more results, your PC runs fine, and i have only deteted one virus in 372 downloads. Never download stuff that only one person has, multiple people is safer cause they mostlikely used the file before.

It has the same layout as any other Shareware prgramm and never got stuck on my PC so far and runs perfectly smooth like a PC programm should

Shareaza is easy to use, opensource, and connects to 3 networks, Gnutella, Gnutella2 and edonkey2000, so the results are pretty good. Kazza is horrible, KazaaliteK++ is better, but the network they use(Fasttrack) is in decline.
Exeem 0.21a while it has adware, but not spyware in this version, (so they say), is a little buggy, but when working, gives excellent speeds.
I only use these for downloading new versions of Linux, BTW ;)
