Problems with router

We have been with Time Warner(formerly Adelphia) since we have had our internet connection. When they were Adelphia before, no problems. And if we did have a problem, they would come right out and fix it. Ever since Time Warner bought Adelphia, it's all been hell. Between the connection cutting in and out, them not coming for a week, and the 3 hour wait times on the phone. A few days ago we ordered AT&T Elite package and it came in the mail yesterday. We hooked it up, installed the disc that it came with(not sure why this was needed) and it didn't work. It works when we are directly connected to the modem(one computer, upstairs, of which I'm currently on) but not when it is hooked up to our router.

If you didn't understand what I'm trying to say - basically the only way I can get internet right now is by a direct connection from my modem into my computer upstairs. When I plug my modem into the router, it doesn't work on this computer upstairs, or any other one in the house(Xbox 360, too).

So..a few questions

1. Could the router still have some settings that need to be reset from Time Warner?
2. Do I need to call AT&T and ask them what I need to do to set up a router on their connection?
3. Do I need a new router?

If none of these are what is needed, please respond and help me out. No internet for a week and 2 days is hell for me. :P

1. Yes, the router may still have previous settings from Time Warner. Or sometimes it may be slow picking up an IP address. I know it took me about 4 tries to get my dad's router to pick up our IP address. This is usually handled within the router's setup.

2. Typically, no. Most connections today get their IP address automatically. If it works on your PC without any changes being made (IE by DHCP) the same should work with the router.

3. Was the router provided from Time Warner? Perhaps they have something locked so it may only be used with their service...

The router was not from Time Warner, we had it bought from Bestbuy(I believe). I tried resetting it and still no luck. It worked perfectly fine with the Time Warner modem(we canceled them since they couldn't come for 2 weeks and we didn't have internet). And why does a direct connection work, but then through the router it doesn't? I just want to get this thing fixed..do you have AIM by chance?

Have you tried powering down both the router and modem, then power up the modem, wait until it has power cycled completely then power up the router?

That didn't remedy the problem. On their site it looks like you have to purchase their gateway. Not sure, yet.

Give At&t a call. I would bet that your old ISP used DHCP and I think At&t uses staic IP addresses.

If so, ask them for your IP, subnetmask, Gateway address, and primary and secondary DNS server addresses.

Then you will need to set your router to static addressing and enter that info.

I did call them, and they were really of no help. Also, I can get all of that from the modem configuration page.
