Problems with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2

I have a laptop with windows xp pro service pack 2 that was upgraded from service pack 1. Now the laptop doesnt connect to the internet or connect to the other computers on the same network. All the computers on the network are on the same workgroup name and on the same subnet. I have another computer but it has windows xp home service pack 2 and it works fine. Both computers have the firewall disabled that came with the service pack 2. Anybody help me please. I need the laptop as it shares the printer across the network. The laptop worked fine when it had service pack 1 but my bro deleted a file that caused some of the shortcut functions to not work and the start menu and taskbar doesnt show. And yes I have gone through the control panel to the start menu and taskbar applet to show taskbar but doesnt show. I had then inserted the windows xp pro that has service pack 2 slipstreamed into the cd to repair the system files and now the start menu and all shows. Now its only the first problem that I have that I have written before all this jabber. Please help me. If you need additional information just ask. Not sure what else I have but I will give more information if I can.
Thank you!!

I had a similar problem but I was working into a Domain, and not in a WorkGroup. What I learned from my problem was that updating onto SP2 sometimes brings problems. In my case, the SP1 computers couldnt reach all the services of the NET. What I did was the following:

first, I took out the problematic computers from the LAN, by adding them to a WorkGroup instead of my domain. I rebooted. And after that, I returned it to the domain again.

After this operation, the computers were completely integrated in the net.

Try to do something like this.

Good luck!
