Probs after reinstalling Win 98

Hi, Im trying to help my dad and fix his computer. Since there was so much stuff that was unneeded and slowing down the computer, I completely reformatted the hardrive and reinstalled windows 98 through MS-Dos. So Im pretty much starting from scratch. Well i came upon two problems. The first one is the display color setting. I can only get up to 16 colors and i need more. Im suspecting I need a new driver but I dont know where to find one and none of my recovery disk seem to have one i can use. Here is what I know about the display adapters, I dont know exactly what you need to help me so Im gonna give you everything that seems like it has to do with the display. I went to control panel then system and then display adapters and found "Standard display adapter (VGA)". I also found something under system devices that said intel 82810 system and graphics controller. Will a new driver fix this? If so where can i find one and how do i install it if I download the driver from another computer?

The second problem is that I cant connect to the internet because when i try to set up a connection the computer cant detect a modem. I also looked under control panel and system to find no modem but i found something under network adapters called a dial up adapter. I also found a couple devices under "other devices" called a PCI communication device and one that was an unknown device. What do i need to do to establish a modem? I dont know if the information I gave may help but it is all i can come up with. Any help with any of these problems is greatly appreciated.

Make sure that all of the disks that came with your dad's computer don't have some of these files on them. I would suspect that the files for these components are on the cds that were originally sent with the computer and OS. (Both problems should be solved by this..., unless I'm wrong of course... :))

it was not the disk made for the computer. I have a windows 98 se install cd but it is not the recovery disk. The floppy i have is just a startup disk. I tried to get the computer to search for drivers in the floppy and cd drive but had no luck.

You may want to open up the computer case and see what kind of video card and modem you have installed. Get the manufacturer and model numbers. Then go online on another computer and download them to a floppy or CD and install them.

There may also be a program available that you can download and run in that computer that will tell you what kind of video card and modem you have installed... then you can search for the correct drivers.

One of these programs may work for you...

The modem i have is a us robotics model 0637. I figure if i get this working then my windows autoupdate will find the driver for my display. So, I tried to find the driverfor the modem but the one I found would not work. It would not detect it on my cd through the wizard I used. I tried to add new hardware and I also tried to let the computer autodetect the modem. All of this with no luck. Anyone know any step by steps to make this thing work? Im sorry im being so difficult but im not to computer literate.

OK Ive tried what yall told me as far as I now and still no luck. Ill tell you exactly what i did and maybe you can tell me where i went wrong. First I downloaded the zip file to a cd then opened the file and sent all of the files to a folder so i could resave the file as an unzipped file. I got on the messed up computer went to control panel then modems and attempted to set up a new modem. I tried to get the computer to automatically detect the modem but of course it didnt so it sent me to a list of modems but i selected "have disk" which took me to a window asking where it was located and I selected the cd rom drive. Then it says select port. It had a Communication port (COM1) and ECP printer port (LPT 1). I selected COM 1. Then it says installing then when it finishes I click finished. So it sounds as if its set up but when i try to set up an internet connection I have to go through the same steps again and again to setup a modem because it does not find one. And no matter how many times i try to set the modem up again it does not work. So what am i doin wrong? Maybe a wrong driver?

It could be that it is the wrong driver but it sounds like you've tried all of them that are available. Was the modem working recently... maybe the modem is bad. Does the driver you downloaded have an *.exe or some type of setup file included in it? If so try running the setup.exe or install.exe. If it just has a .inf file then you are installing it properly through add/remove hardware.

Let's see... you have double checked that you have the correct modem model number right? You have uninstalled and re-installed the modem itself... maybe tried another slot? You've downloaded all the possible drivers for that model? Sounds like you are following the installation properly. I don't know what else to tell ya myself.

Unless someone else can lead you down a different road, I'd say your next step is getting a new modem... they are relatively cheap nowadays. Maybe you can find one in an old computer where someone has upgraded to cable or dsl and maybe they have the install disc.
