im looking for a good gaming processor and im building a comp on compaq.com.....theres a choice between where i can upgrade to an "AMD Athlon 3700+ (2.2GHz / 1MB L2 cache) by paying $40 dollars extra....ORRR...spend another $30 bucks and get an AMD Athlon 3800+ (2.4GHz / 512KB L2 cache).... i guess the 3800+ is supposed to have some hyper-transport system (no idea what that is please explain :D )....whats recomened like i said, for the average gamer that doesnt have a money tree in their back yard

I'd probably stick with the 3700+, i don't think that the 3800 is worth the extra money. If you can afford it, though, i'd look at the X2 3800+, for $40 more than the regular 3800 you're getting a dual core processor.

Heya

I would also get the 3800+ if I were you (unless you intent to overclock a bit). The A64s all utlise the HTT - Hyper Transport technology so even the 3700+ uses it. In terms of performance, there will be very little difference between the two. The cache plays a small role.

JAN :D

He doesnt have the 3700, thats one of the choices to upgrade to.

hes saying that it would cost him an extra $40 from base to a 3700+, or $30 extra from base to a 3800+. I would go with the 3800+.

HTT, Hyper Transport Technology, is essentially the AMD version of FSB (front-side-bus).

ya the comp im looking at is gonna have 1gb mem and i guess u guys are saying i should pay the extra for the 3800+??? the video card will be some kind of geforce (i think like 3200 or something..not sure)...so overall it would be worth the money?

CPU 101

If the 3800 isnt worth the money and the performance delta from 3700->3800 is more than the delta from 3500->3700 then why would you get the 3700? ;)

Almost. It cost +$40 to get 3700 and +$70 to get 3800

Well Intel uses it too ... its just buried a bit deeper :)

(i think like 3200 or something..not sure)...
