"Process specific Processor"

basically i have no spending limit, but i dont want to waste money. I also know that you have to base your entire computer off of the CPU. I would use this computer for AIM, music, internet, watching movies, and mild gaming. The gaming is more of a "if i have time" sorta thing, and its not with todays "hot titles", more of a "oh i just found GTA III, lets pop this in." So any advice as to what processor to base my computer off of would be greatly appreciated.

If you want my opinion, I hate the new processors, they heat up and the cooling systems are getting much more complicated than ever bringing a lot of trouble with them if they stop working.

I recommend, Intel 2.4, 2.6 or 2.8 Ghz with 1 MB L2 Cache. I am not sure if these processors come with HT or not, but I think they do.

1MB of L2 cache would be a Prescott core. The 2.8GHz will be the only one that can potentinally have HT and 800Mhz bus. The 2.4, 2.6 come with a 533MHz bus and no HT (there is a 2.8 in this model as well)

The 2.6 I have is an 800 bus with HT. Unless you were talking about the socket 775 and/or the prescott,
He was talking about the prescott, which he was correct about, the 2.8E is the lowest one with HT.

I don't think that heat is that big of a problem unless you're overclocking. My 3.4C runs pretty cool with an old Thermaltake HSF.

No it doesn't but I wasn't sure what you were talking about.

I thought this was clear enough :)
It doesn't hurt to give him options that include the superior (IMO) northwood core.

it doesnt have to be fast, as i dont want to "waste" money, all i want is a computer, but i dont want to be "made fun of" for having a celeron......like i said, i dont game or anything, all i need is a computer that runs :D

Grab a middle of the fence S775 (x30) setup (or the classic S478 2.8C) and you should be ok :)
